Chapter 16

Grant led me into a small office at the end of a long hallway. I didn’t get to see much of the barracks, just the long hall with several closed doors.

My uncle looked comfortable in the plain office; a wooden desk, two chairs, and a bookshelf were the only things occupying the space. He perched on the edge of the desk and motioned to one of the chairs, like he’d been here before.

I hadn’t seen him since our visit in the Forest of Tears when he told me Elise, Queen of the Woodland Fae, was my grandmother and he was my uncle. He looked much different today. His strawberry blond hair was a little longer and a short beard grew on his chin. Rather than the mismatched leather garb from our first visit, he now wore the Oceanic Fae’s shiny armor with a satchel slung across his chest.

I sat in the wooden chair, wondering why he was here and not in his own realm. The last time we spoke, he’d tried to convince me to help him overthrow his queen. I tried to keep a straight face with that thought and failed. Here I was, doing exactly what he wanted.

“You look different,” he said, leaning forward with his elbow on one knee.

“Killing a bunch of people tends to change a person,” I grumbled. “You guys wouldn’t know what that feels like though, would you?”

“I wouldn’t know,” he said, holding my gaze, “but many of the warriors here were alive during some of our darkest times.” He pulled the strap over his head and opened his brown leather bag. “I was referring to your eyes, though.”

“Shit happens,” I muttered, not willing to explain my elementals to him.

A deep furrow formed between his eyes as he frowned. I should care what he thought of me, I knew I should. He was my only family besides my crazy grandmother, and in an ideal world, we could reconnect. We could be a normal family who took care of each other. Instead, his disapproving look just pissed me off. Who did he think he was?

“Have they not told you how distasteful your language is to them?”

A short bark of laughter escaped my lips before I snapped them shut. He wasn’t laughing. “Um, no,” I replied, thinking back to all my conversations with Ronquil, Coral, and even Alra. None of them really swore, but they never mentioned it to me either. The question was, did I care? Yeah, if only because I was trying to make friends instead of enemies. “I suppose I can try to reinforce my filter, but it’s already working overtime.”

He huffed and pulled a small box from the bag. My eyes widened at the intricate carvings on the tiny wooden box. It didn’t appear to have a latch or hinges, but I could feel the magic radiating from it.

“Your father asked me to give this to you,” Grant said, dropping the satchel on the floor and extending his hand with the box.
